Founder

Dr Mehmet Zahid Ercan is the founder of Innoway. Dr Ercan has 20 years of experience in e-health. He started his health informatics journey by developing an EMR software for university and teaching hospitals. The EMR software has been a pioneer in the industry by introducing electronic physician orders, closed loop medication, electronic invoicing, and many other features more than a decade ago. Today, all hospitals using this EMR have HIMSS EMRAM Stage 6 certification.

Dr Ercan has designed and implemented a NoSQL-based national EHR system in a country with a population of 85 million in 2014 that integrates 1200+ hospitals and 20k+ family physicians. Dr Ercan has extensive experience in interoperability, minimum data sets, coding systems, and standardisation of health-related terminology. These have been building blocks for the national EHR system. The system currently manages billions of health records and its patient portal is used by 40m+ registered end users.

Dr Ercan then shifted his focus to extracting value from the data to achieve greater benefits for the health system and humanity. Combining AI with EHRs, clinical decision support, chronic disease management, nutrition and fitness data, among others, generated substantial value for both physicians and patients while demonstrating good real-life examples of AI in healthcare.

In addition to solving challenging e-health problems and contributing to what state-of-the-art is, Dr Ercan assists medical students to have a better understanding of e-health with his lectures of Health Informatics and supervises PhD candidates.

Dr Ercan holds a master’s degree in information technology, has completed his PhD on evaluation of database systems for large scale EHR implementations at University of Southern Queensland, and is a member of Australasian Institute of Digital Health.
